Resources for Research
North Carolina and Person County are full of interesting history. Some stories have been hidden over time, and the process of finding them and bringing them to the surface is an exciting adventure! The Time Travelers' goal is to learn, preserve, and share history so that future generations can have a deeper appreciation for their heritage. That is why today, we are sharing a list of our favorite online resources so that you, too, can go on a journey to discover the special history of North Carolina. Whether you are playing along in our 2019 Person County History Hunt (*see below) or are just curious about the stories that have shaped our community, these sites will lead you down a fascinating and fun research road!
The Library of Congress has a large online database with historic documents, books, photographs, magazines, and much, much more. It is a wonderful research tool.
The North Carolina Museum of History is a Smithsonian affiliate located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Not only does the museum showcase exhibits and artifacts about our state history, but their website also has interesting historical tidbits.
NC Pedia is an online collection of articles that covers all angles of NC history, including ones written about notable people of Person County.
Digital NC is an online database of NC primary sources that covers newspapers, photographs, and much more. Included in their collection are copies of The Roxboro Courier from 1922 to 1946.
The North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program shares nuggets of NC history through their silver and black signs on the roadsides. This database enables you to find the location and read the signs from home, as well as get a little more information than what the sign is able to share.
The Person County Museum of History, located in uptown Roxboro, shares local history through artifacts and exhibits about everything from our connection to the Titanic to the Native Americans that have called this area their home.
Person County Historical Markers are a great way to discover local history and see where it happened. This webpage shares a list of all of the historical markers in our county, both those erected by the state and the county.
The Courier-Times newspaper has published articles about local history and monument dedications for history coming to the surface, such as the Satterfield family cemetary.
The Reminiscing in Roxboro Facebook page is a public group of history lovers that share their favorite stories and pictures.
The Lost and Found History of Roxboro and Person County Facebook page is a public group that covers lesser known history of the Person County area and NC and is a treasure trove of historic photos.
The Daniel Bros General Store and Brookland Post Office Facebook page is a private group run by a local historian and mostly includes information about the Brookland community.
Finally, our The Time Travelers blog will be adding posts about local history, so keep your eyes open for those! Our first such post can be found here, and includes a documentary about Dolley Madison created by the club that placed second in a state-wide history competition!
